Anya Taylor-Joy's Costumes in The Queen's Gambit Were '60s-Inspired and Made Just For Her
Anya Taylor-Joy is captivating as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, which takes place in the '50s and '60s and is an adaptation of Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name. The costumes she wears throughout the seven-episode series, vivid and striking as those we admired in Mad Men, cannot be searched or shopped for.
"All of Beth's wardrobe was made in our own tailor's workshop that stocks costumes exclusively for movies and TV shows," French costume designer Gabriele Binder, who styled the characters, told POPSUGAR. Even though Gabriele says she shopped a lot of vintage for the show, the appeal of these looks is that they are one-of-a-kind, and inspired by major '60s style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Edie Sedgwick, who wore their clothing in very much the same way that Beth does. Beth is self-confident, free-spirited, and she loves fashion, as she admits during a gathering at chess pro Benny Watts's place in New York. (Benny is played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and also has his own original sense of '60s style crafted carefully by Binder.)
If you've already watched the show, chances are you're hung up on certain looks - the gingham cutout swimsuit Beth wears in Mexico City, which, as it turns out, was chosen for its subtle nod to a chess board, or the winged, Sedgwick-esque eyeliner - and we had to ask Binder about them all. If you haven't watched The Queen's Gambit yet, you're in for a mesmerizing treat - and the fashion can be appreciated again and again in Netflix's new virtual costume exhibit, too. When you scroll, you'll find out which pieces from Beth's wardrobe Taylor-Joy took home from set, her favorite costume to wear, and the style icons Binder and her team studied to dream up the fashion moments that came to life brilliantly on the show.
Take a 360-Degree Tour of the 20 Most Iconic Costumes From The Crown and The Queen's Gambit
Episode after episode, The Queen's Gambit and The Crown have delivered with elegant costumes that have left us wishing we could explore the wardrobe department just for a day. In partnership with the Brooklyn Museum, Netflix has created a virtual costume exhibition that shows off 20 of the most iconic outfits from the shows, including Princess Diana's stunning wedding dress.
The self-guided 3D tour, open from Oct. 30 to Dec. 13, specifically takes a 360-degree look at Beth Harmon and Queen Elizabeth's most memorable fashion moments from the shows. Fans of the The Crown will also get a sneak peek at what Gillian Anderson wears as Margaret Thatcher in season four of, which airs on Nov. 15. Clicking on an outfit gives you the opportunity to zoom in on small details, watch clips from the shows to see the outfit on screen, and read up on the costume's history, including the fabric it's made out of and who designed it. (For anyone wondering, Princess Diana's dress is made of silk tafetta with a lace trim.)
The exhibit is also accompanied by a virtual panel discussion moderated by costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who gives behind-the-scenes insight on each outfit alongside Brooklyn Museum Curator Matthew Yokobosky. Take a closer look at some of the most elegant costumes from the shows ahead, and take yourself on a tour of all the outfits from The Queen and The Crown: A Virtual Costume Exhibition here.
We're Enamored by the Rainbow Gown Ashley Park Wore to Sing “Over The Rainbow”
Ashley Park decided to wow us all in a gorgeous rainbow dress on The Drew Barrymore Show. After watching Emily in Paris, a lot people wondered if Ashley, who plays Mindy Chen on the show, actually sings IRL. The answer is yes, she most certainly does, and her voice is incredible. (Her breakout role was playing Tuptim in The King and I in 2015, but she is best known for originating the role of Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls!)
On the show, Ashley gave a moving performance of the classic song "Over The Rainbow" wearing the most appropriate gown for the occasion. The actress wore a stunning rainbow gown by Christian Siriano that looked like it was created just for this special moment. The gown was made out of multicolored tulle pieces that formed a rainbow. The pops of green, yellow, purple, and red all made for a truly show-stopping moment. We love those ruffle shoulder accents as well! Ashley kept her hair up in a bun, so as not to draw attention away from her gown. Keep reading to get a closer look at the beautiful dress. Then, watch the entire video of Ashley singing "Over The Rainbow" too.

These Stylish Celebrity Costumes Prove That Halloween Is Alive and Well
If you thought dressing up for Halloween was cancelled because we're all staying home, allow me to show you some stylish celebrity costumes that'll make you think again. You see, I'm the type of person who looks forward to *spooky szn* each year, but I wasn't sure if it would be worth the effort. After taking a look at some of these stars (who always seem to take it to the next level with their amazing outfits!), I can't wait to dress up - even if it's just to hang out in my living room with my SO.
Mindy Kaling showed us that dressing up for Halloween doesn't have to be super intricate by throwing together an orange tank top over a white T-shirt to channel Devi from her Netflix show Never Have I Ever. Even Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays the character, approved of her look! Janelle Monáe encouraged her fans to vote while being dressed up as The Joker, full face of makeup and all! If you're looking to go all out, check out Halsey's costume. The singer transformed herself into Emily from Tim Burton's Corpse Bride with a flower crown, bustier dress, and long white gloves.
Clearly, these stylish celebrity costumes prove that Halloween is still very much a thing this year and will maybe inspire you to dress up as well - if you weren't planning on it already! Ahead, take a look at all the costumes your favorite A-listers have worn so far.

Mindy Kaling Nailed Her Never Have I Ever Costume, and You Can Too - Here's How
Mindy Kaling basically dressed as a younger version of herself for Halloween, aka Devi Vishwakumar from her hit Netflix show, Never Have I Ever, and it's no surprise she totally crushed it. (The character of Devi, who's played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, is loosely based on Mindy's own childhood.) On Thursday, just a few days before the spooky holiday, the writer and producer shared her costume on Instagram, nailing not just the outfit, but Devi's exact pose. She even had two friends dress as Devi's love interests, Paxton and Ben, and the trio looks absolutely adorable.
If you're still on the hunt for a costume and inspired by Mindy's Devi, it's surprisingly easy to put together - and at least a few of the pieces you need are probably already sitting in your closet. Simply layer a canary-yellow tank over a plain white T-shirt, and pair 'em with printed shorts. Add some silver hoops and a red backpack, tie a green sweater around your waist, and voilà! You, too, can look as cute as Mindy.
Luckily, Devi wore an array of other relatable yet stylish outfits you can also mimic for Halloween, if Mindy's choice isn't your vibe. Whether you get a crew together to dress up as Devi, Fabiola, and Eleanor or pull off the look yourself, here's how you can DIY her costume. Ahead, shop similar items to re-create Mindy's look and get excited for Halloween.

Emma Roberts Introduces Us to a Made-to-Order Face Mask Brand - BRB, Customizing My Own
Mom-to-be Emma Roberts has certainly been having fun showing off her maternity style, which consists of more dreamy house dresses than we can count at this point. Emma accessorized her Tory Burch baby shower dress with a matching face mask that came in the same floral print, and it appears she pays just as much attention to the style of her entire collection of face coverings. Our favorite one yet? The "VOTE" design she just shared on Instagram, which comes from Ahida Correale, a brand that allows you to choose your denim mask in a made-to-order process. Yep, you can pick any two-word slogan, monogram, or uplifting phrase you like!
Emma has a second iteration from Ahida Correale that says "Wear It!" to draw attention to the importance of covering up to stop the spread of COVID-19. We love that Emma decided to ask for embroidery that hopefully inspires her fans to make socially and politically conscious efforts. But we also love the way she's incorporating these masks into her outfits. Scroll down to check out Emma wearing her "VOTE" mask with a Storets dress and By Far loafers, and check out her second mask after the jump. Then, shop the Ahida Correale items, along with similar masks that you can personalize to your liking.
Staying in Touch With My Personal Style After 150 Days of Sweatpants
The shoes sitting pretty at the top of my closet have started collecting dust. So really, I guess they're not sitting so pretty anymore. One by one, I have actually heard them shimmy loose from the spots I positioned them in on the shoe rack five months ago, falling with a thud to the floor. But I don't do anything about it - I'm kind of enjoying being lazy right now, and I don't have any use for my neon kitten heels or white leather boots.
But that also sounds pretty sad, especially since styling outfits is so much a part of who I am. Even if I've experienced momentary bursts of fashion enthusiasm throughout lockdown, they were short-lived. I styled a beach outfit to go sit on the sand and meditate for awhile, social distancing from everyone around me. I styled outfits for work photo shoots, even putting on a little bit of makeup, just to take it all off after I snapped some selfies and hung my clothes back up on the rack. Sometimes I put on accessories for Zoom calls, but knowing that I'm generally more comfortable typing without bracelets and rings on, I usually just end up taking them off too.
"My personal style has always evolved, and regardless of what route the trend cycle takes, I want my own outfits to keep representing who I am."
Here I am, feeling almost guilty because I haven't been using much of my wardrobe at all. I've been living out of three drawers: the sweats drawer, the workout clothes drawer, and the swimsuit-slash-cover-up drawer. Yes, this is partly my fault, because I could have spent more time in house dresses and ribbed matching sets, but I'm sure that I'm not alone in thinking that working in pajamas is pretty relaxing. Now I have to ask myself if I even remember how to get dressed. But more importantly, I wonder if I've held onto my personal style through all of this. Has my style changed, and how do I know that it has?
I look back at this old photo of myself and remember creating the outfit so vividly. I just knew that, for me, this silk Self-Portrait robe called for a '70s moment with wide-leg jeans, and that I'd take a walk on the wild side in a ribbed, cropped tank that reminds me of the early 2000s. Not everyone would style these pieces that way, but at the time I was so sure that it was the right look for me. I guess that's the feeling I realize is now missing from my life: the feeling of being sure.
Right now, it's impossible to know when our lives will go back to normal and what the new normal will even look like. Like most people, that uncertainty is rooted in when we'll see friends and family, hug, and resume the daily activities we love and maybe took for granted. For me, it's also rooted in what I do and in what the fashion industry will look like. It's impossible to predict how the street style trend cycle will spin - will it pick back up where it left off? And will people take notice or even care to participate? Will they continue to dress for themselves, either sticking to the more relaxed athleisure they've become accustomed to, or go all out with bold, new fashion perspectives and looks we've never seen before?
Thinking about how I'm going to dress once I step back into the hustle and bustle of "real life" seems pretty insignificant in the whole scheme of things, I know this. But I also know that cherishing all the little parts of you that make you you is an important way to stay grounded and continue your journey of self-love, especially when the future feels like a mystery.
For awhile now, I've been reminiscing about the past - at least when the topic of "getting dressed" comes into play - but if I don't get to know who I am or what I like, I'll need to play catch up later. My personal style has always evolved, and regardless of what route the trend cycle takes, I want my own outfits to keep representing who I am. I think I'll start by visiting the shoes at the bottom of my closet, since they do seem to be calling my name.

Emily Ratajkowski Found a New Way to Show Off Her Baby Bump, and It Screams Emrata
If you think Emily Ratajkowski would let her baby bump stop her from wearing a midriff-baring shirt, think again. Since announcing her pregnancy in a sweet story on Vogue wearing a silk slip dress, Emily has been showing us that her maternity looks will be anything but basic. First, she wore an Aya Muse bodycon sweater dress that had side cutouts. And most recently, Emily has given us just another way to show off some skin while styling her bump. Emrata stepped out in a white button-down shirt by Uniqlo that was oversize. Rather than buttoning it, Emily decided to take a unique styling approach and left half of the shirt unbuttoned to show off her growing bump.
We love that supermodel found a way to embrace her bump with a classic wardrobe staple. Emily finished her look off with a pair of vintage Levi's jeans that were tucked into a pair of brown, knee-high boots by Paris Texas. (She also styled her dress the other day with a similar style of knee-high boots in red.) For the finishing touches, Emrata threw on a camel-colored jacket and sunglasses. Keep reading to see Emily's latest maternity style moment. Then, shop out similar versions of her classic collared shirt for your wardrobe ahead.
This Designer's Powerful Letter Reminds Us That the Fashion Industry Must Do Better to Support Women of Color
Carly Cushnie is closing her namesake label after 12 years due to business struggles during the coronavirus pandemic. Cushnie originally partnered with Michelle Ochs on the brand when it was called Cushnie et Ochs, but the duo parted ways in 2018. Cushnie's DNA always remained strong - it was a label we looked to (and many celebrities tapped) for dress wear and events. Unfortunately, as Carly Cushnie noted to Vogue, "I make clothes for people to go out and enjoy their lives in. I don't make loungewear. I didn't have the ability to just suddenly switch and entirely change what my brand does. That takes a great expense, to change the direction of a brand. Whether it's the category or the price point, it's a big undertaking and I wasn't able to do it."
Cushnie's powerful letter to the fashion community has sparked a more important conversation surrounding the support of the industry, which was lacking from the start. "One of the great ironies of the fashion industry is that while it caters to and profits from women, it has never felt like an industry that supports them. This is especially true for women of color," she writes. Though she mentions her accomplishments - she has had the honor of dressing the likes of Michelle Obama and Beyoncé, was appointed a board member of the CFDA, and was one of the first Black female designers to collab with Target - and they are hugely indicative of her creativity and her talent, she is just one person fighting a bigger battle for more representation in her sphere.
"It would have been better had there been more support for female designers and women of color in the industry."
"While added support during this time has been nice, it would have been better had there been more support for female designers and women of color in the industry before everyone started to support Black-owned brands so visibly over the last few months," Cushnie told Vogue, while touching on the surge in brand recognition she has experienced with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Cushnie signed off her message to the fashion industry with a positive note: "The desire to set an example for young women of color has always been a driving force in my career, and I am confident and hopeful that the distance I have traveled will help to pave the way for the next generation of diverse talent. As one of the few Black female designers to achieve this level of success, I am both humbled and empowered by the undeniable mark that I have made.
We have no doubt that Cushnie herself will go on to see more success in the industry, wherever her path takes her, but we will certainly miss her looks on the runway and the red carpet. She is one of the only designers, in my opinion, who has managed to successfully meet sex appeal with smooth sophistication. Scroll down to see a few of our favorite Cushnie looks in recent history, because there is no doubt they should be celebrated, appreciated, and remembered.

I'm Only Wearing Loungewear, and You Can't Stop Me - Here Are My Favorites
When it comes to comfortable clothing, you're going to have a challenging time trying to talk me out of wearing my cozy lounge pants. Sure, I have soft jeans and tons of stretchy workout tights, but nothing beats wearing flattering loungewear. I have pants with elastic waistbands and waist ties, some with prints, and even some with fun details like tassels and cargo pockets. So if you, too, are living for loungewear and looking to add to your at-home game, you've definitely come to the right person. I'm always hunting for new pieces I can add to my rotation, and right now, these styles are at the top of my list. Prices start at just $18.
The 25 Coats Worth Wearing in 2020
Fashion lovers know that, come winter, their coat is the statement-making piece of their outfit. You could be wearing couture or pajamas, but the coat speaks first, and it's so important to get right. We like to have a few different options, especially if we feel like changing up our styles. When the temperature dips, we stock up on coats, and these are the 25 we like this year.
So, what exactly are the styles we'll be wearing this year? Right now, we're into classic buttoned shapes, a little fringe moment, and ultrawarm puffer coats for when the temperature dips. When it comes to coats, we like neutrals because they're so easy to pair with a bunch of different outfits, but we're the first to admit that sometimes a pop of color or pattern is fun. Start the fall season with your best coat forward.

Grant Me the Grace of Lizzo Casting Her Mail-In Ballot in a Star-Spangled Bralette
After months of urging her fans to vote in the 2020 election, Lizzo cast her mail-in ballot, and she made sure to do it in patriotic style. In a video shared to her Instagram account on Oct. 28, she showed up to her local ballot box in a glittery, star-spangled bralette inspired by the American flag and a pair of white denim shorts. Lizzo paired the look with glittery Jimmy Choo x Timberland boots, layered necklaces, a reflective silver face mask, and a glossy red clutch to hold her ballot before sliding it into the ballot box. While her outfit made a statement on its own, Lizzo also took to the caption section to encourage voters to submit their abstentee and mail-in ballots before the presidential election on Nov. 3.
"I VOTED. This is my 3rd time voting in my whole life," Lizzo captioned the video, in which her new red hair was blowing in the wind with all the grace of the American flag. "When you think about how few and far in between that is it really puts things into perspective! I believe this is the beginning of making voting ACCESSIBLE and FAIR so that this country reflects its people. To all my activists, thank you for your constant organizing & service. Let's get our vote in so we can get back to the good fight for true liberty and justice for ALL. Have YOU voted yet?" Take a closer look at her outfit ahead, and find out more about how to safely cast your vote this election season.
15 Stylish New Essentials to Fit Our Lifestyle This Winter
Rather than trying to wear the fall/winter fashion trends straight off the runway, we're reinterpreting them for the lifestyle we've been adjusting to. That means everything we invest in has a cozy element. Our boots, sweaters, and outerwear are versatile pieces that we can layer over slips or feathered PJ sets. Even though we're still in tune to mood-boosting colors that seem to be taking over our Instagram feeds or popular silhouettes (see: cutout sweater dresses), we're not shopping for anything right now that feels too high-fashion or unwearable.
That's why you're going to love the 15 essentials we've curated ahead. We're offering you advice on how you might wear them when you're lounging around before a Zoom call indoors and how you can style them for walks, outdoor dining, or running errands this winter. From the puffer vest to furry slippers with structured soles that will actually support you on a stroll, you'll definitely want to invest in a few of these basics, if not more. Scroll through to determine what's missing from your wardrobe, and shop some of our favorite versions of these must-have trends to get you through the season in style.
Outfit Obsession: Zoë Kravitz's "Mornings Suck" Vampire Halloween Costume Is a Whole 2020 Vibe
Halloween is going to look a lot different this year, but my girl Zoë Kravitz already figured out the perfect look . . . and it's actually from 2018! The actress got super creative a few years back while attending a Casamigos Halloween party in an outfit she dubbed "Mornings Suck Vampire." While we may not be attending parties this year or going trick-or-treating, the actress's look is actually pretty darn perfect if you're staying at home, but still want to dress up for spooky season.
Zoë's creative look consisted of a fluffy pink towel perched on her head, a long red robe layered over a tank and boxers, which were covered in blood. She completed her look with a pair of Seinfeld logo shin-length socks (which I need!) and a fashionable pair of Gucci Princetown fur-lined slides. As for her accessories, she wore a pair of crystal-encrusted cat-eye sunglasses, carried a stack of newspapers, and a cheery smiley face mug. Keep reading to relive her amazing outfit and shop out similar pieces if you want to give it a try this year ahead.
We Must Discuss Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Outfits on the Cover of Vanity Fair
Her signature look might be her red lipstick, but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has simultaneously redefined the power suit. The 31-year-old congresswoman graced the December issue of Vanity Fair for a conversation about her upbringing, being the frequent subject of right-wing ridicule, and so much more. A quick glance through the digital story and it doesn't take long to realize that AOC's outfits speak volumes. She opened up about the conundrum she faces while getting dressed for work, and it's representative of who she is as a person and the reason why so many people well beyond her district look up to her: her relatability.
"It's legitimately hard being a first-generation woman . . . and being working class, trying to navigate a professional environment," Alexandria said in the interview. "It continues to take me so long to try to figure out how to look put-together without having a huge designer closet." But she shows up with confidence and conviction in outfits that represent her authentic self.
Her outfits throughout the cover story tell the same message, they're powerful, subtle, and remind constituents that just like the power suit, her opinions are here to stay. On the cover, Alexandria wears a striking white suit by Aliétte with her signature red lip, Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. Her beautiful polka dot dress is by designer Wales Bonner. And that absolutely fabulous black suit with multicolored tassels is by Loewe. Check out the photos ahead, and pick up the December issue of Vanity Fair on newsstands November 10.
If Gwen Stefani Wears a White Wedding Dress, Will There Be Cowboy Boots Underneath?
I'm not going to lie, a part of me wants Gwen Stefani to walk down the aisle to Blake Shelton in cargo pants and cowboy boots. But I'm sure she'll impress us in something far better than that. The singer has worn the likes of Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, Vera Wang, and Margiela on red carpets past, but her first wedding dress (which she wore in 2002 to marry Gavin Rossdale), was by John Galliano. The designer created her a custom dip-dyed dress in an asymmetrical silhouette with a pink skirt. Gwen brought the color moment full circle with a tiny pink bow pinned to the tulle at the top of her corset - because not all brides wear white.
Of course, Gwen has come a long way in her fashion evolution since then, but we like to think she'll always pay homage to her punk roots, and maybe add a subtle, tough edge to her bridal look. We're thinking something along the lines of the "Fashion Icon" train she wore to the 2019 People's Choice Awards, customized by Vera Wang. Ahead, we've gathered some of Gwen's most striking fashion moments, all of which showcase her range of style. From sequins and tulle to bright colors and sheer panels, Gwen can truly wear anything. Only time will tell if she adds a country twist to her party look. Is anyone else picturing a bejeweled bodysuit and diamond-encrusted cowgirl hat for dancing the night away at the reception?
Drake's Merch Collection With Nike Is Called "Certified Lover Boy," and We're in Love
Drake is a man after my own heart, and now he has a Nike merch collection that I can wear on the regular. While many of us know the rapper by his many names like Drizzy, Champagne Papi, Aubrey Graham, and, of course, October's Very Own, Drake wants to add another one to the list: "Lover Boy." The name of the merch collection is pretty fitting since his highly anticipated sixth studio album, which releasing in January, is going to be called Certified Lover Boy. He even mentions it in his recent song "Laugh Now Cry Later" and the merch line with Nike was even teased in the music video.
The collection, which just dropped on Drake's website, includes a line of T-shirts, hoodies, outerwear, and even some cute accessories. My personal favorite has to be the heart-embroidered puffer jacket that comes in both pink and black. (Sadly, they puffers already sold out.) One t-shirt features a poem written by Drake himself and has a photo of Afro-Swedish twin models, Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjärta, who have been his muses for a while now. Keep reading to see and shop whichever pieces from the collection are left before it sells out ahead.
Emma Roberts Has a Cute Outfit For Every. Dang. Holiday. in Her New Film Holidate
Emma Roberts stars as Sloane in Netflix's new rom-com Holidate, alongside Luke Bracey, who plays love interest Jackson. Even though the duo decide to keep things strictly business - they essentially hire one another as dates for every holiday in the foreseeable future - Sloane definitely gets dressed up glamorously for moments with Jackson, at least when compared to the worn-in sweats she wears at home. Costume designer Helen Huang, who's also worked on American Horror Story and Ted, spoke to POPSUGAR about shopping for each of Sloane's looks. Remember: there's a whole year's worth of holidays to shop for here, and Sloane and Jackson may or may not have strayed from the major Hallmark dates, finding time to see each other on Earth Day, Mother's Day, and Cinco de Mayo, too.
Even though Sloane appears to be up on the latest trends when it comes to outerwear - she has the perfect oversize, check jacket that looks lived-in and a leopard coat that Emma Roberts was personally obsessed with while on set - a lot of the pieces Sloane's wearing are actually vintage. In fact, Huang is somewhat of a thrifting connoisseur, which basically means that you can get Sloane's look for a fraction of the price if you shop wisely. "I loved collaborating with Emma! We have a shared love of clothing that has a history to it. She was just so excited about all the vintage pieces and vibe it imparted on her character.
