9 Styling Tips For Mastering a Business-Casual Outfit

As that return-to-office date slowly creeps up on the calendar, so does the uncertainty about what to wear. Whether your employer has reestablished a new dress code or you're expected to go by the same rules, if you're returning to an office, it's probably time to freshen up your closet with more office-ready apparel. Business-casual clothing should be comfortable, while still helping you achieve a polished look: think blazers, tailored skirts, pantsuits, and sheath dresses that fit well and can be easily mixed and matched with your standard basics.

Putting together a stylish outfit with business-casual attire will require tapping into your existing arsenal of layer-able staples like button-ups and dressy T-shirts. But you don't have to be restricted to an everyday uniform. When shopping for business-casual pieces, items like knee-length skirts and close-toed shoes may be at the top of your list, but you can still incorporate your personality with the right accessories. Work in a designer handbag or your favorite statement jewelry to differentiate your business-casual look.

What Is Business Casual?

The term "business casual" has different definitions depending on the company you work for, your job, and your office location. The easiest way to think of it is as a hybrid way of dressing that's in between formal business attire and casual, everyday wear. It's not essential to wear a full suit, necessarily, but ideally your outfit is still "put together" enough to appear as though you gave your wardrobe some thought. Consider mixing interesting separates and accessories, such as a sleek moto jacket and a new piece of jewelry, or keep it relatively safe in neutral slacks and a patterned blouse. From a style perspective, the business-casual approach allows for workwear that's generally more fashion forward and personality driven.

Business Casual vs. Business Professional

While business casual has room for interpretation and allows you to pull from the casual side of your closet more frequently, business professional is a traditional dress code usually reserved for stricter work environments like government, law, or banking. In this setting, suits, blazers, and shirts are neat (no wrinkles!) and tailored. It's best to avoid overly bright colors and keep accessories to a minimum, except for a simple belt or understated jewelry.

Winnie Harlow and Teyana Taylor Owned the Red Carpet at the 2022 Met Gala

As celebrities paraded up and down the steps of the 2022 Met Gala on Monday night, Teyana Taylor and Winnie Harlow took a moment to bask in the beauty of each other's Iris van Herpen designs. While the silhouettes, colors, and overall aesthetic of their dresses couldn't have been more different, both Taylor and Harlow embraced the gala's "Gilded Glamour" theme, proving without a shadow of a doubt that they understood the assignment.

Taylor's otherworldly design was a semisheer dress with puffed sleeves, a strappy cut-out bodice, and a flowing handkerchief train that pooled behind her in a watercolor pattern. She styled the look with Louboutin sandals, Lillian Shalom jewelry, and a Malakai "Psyche" couture mask made of sterling-silver vines and gills accented with amethyst navettes. Taylor's beauty team completed the look with a slicked-back bun, violet eyeshadow, and a marbled manicure that mirrored the gown's iris and lavender hues.

While Taylor's look played with the color spectrum, Harlow arrived in a monochrome Iris van Herpen minidress reminiscent of a flower. "White Swan," Harlow captioned photos of her look on Instagram. The avant-garde dress featured a circular silhouette painted with intricate, vine-like designs and embellished with spiny accents emerging from the hem and bodice. Each branch-like tendril featured a pointed black cap on the end reminiscent of a porcupine quill. Harlow wore a massive headpiece composed of feathers and gemstones arranged in a crown-like design. She styled the futuristic dress with Wempe diamond jewelry, white slingback heels, and bold mascara.

During the red carpet, Harlow spotted Taylor and strutted over to snap a few photos with her, fully aware of how exceptional their Met Gala looks were. Separately, Harlow and Taylor nailed the event's over-the-top theme, but together, their style game was unmatched.

Opera Gloves Were the Most Popular Accessory on the Met Gala Red Carpet

Opera gloves seemed to be the accessory of choice at the 2022 Met Gala. While you can expect celebrities to wear ornate jewelry, statement-making handbags, and one-of-a-kind gowns on the red carpet, several stars chose to accessorize their looks with this Old Hollywood staple as well. It was a fitting choice given the "Gilded Glamour" theme of this year's gala, as gloves are one of the most recognizable symbols of glamour and were a fashion mainstay during the late 1800s to early 1900s.

On the red carpet, everyone from Olivia Rodrigo to Naomi Campbell styled their standout gowns with matching gloves. Rodrigo complemented her purple, Y2K-inspired Versace gown with a pair of sheer lavender opera gloves, a diamond necklace, dangling earrings, and a silver clutch. Campbell paired her black-embellished Burberry gown with matching gloves and a $6.6 million yellow-diamond necklace.

Edgier gloves created from fabrics like leather and chains also made an appearance, with stars like Kodi Smit-McPhee and Future rocking them. Smit-McPhee opted for a pair of red leather gloves designed by Bottega Veneta to go with his white tailored shirt, denim trousers, and black platform shoes. Future styled his sparkling gloves with an equally shimmering mask, a velvet-lapel tailcoat, and shorts.

One of the most celebrated looks of the night came courtesy of Blake Lively. Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, the cochair opted for copper-colored gloves to complement her dress train, which switched to a gorgeous teal hue that symbolized the oxidization of the monument.

Ahead, take a look at all of the celebrities who wore gloves on the red carpet.

Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham Show Off Their Matching Diamond Wedding Bands

Embellished gowns and tiaras shone bright on the Met Gala red carpet, but Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham's eternity wedding bands shone brighter. The recently married couple put their matching nuptial bling on full display at the annual fashion event three weeks after tying the knot in Palm Beach, FL. Both stars wore seemingly identical rings wrapped with large emerald-cut diamonds and dressed in Valentino looks for the soirée. Nicola donned a hot-pink gown with a plunging neckline and sheer sleeves, and Brooklyn subtly coordinated in an off-white suit, a sheer shirt, and white sneakers.

While admiring the newlyweds' matching rings, we noticed Nicola wearing an entirely new engagement ring. Whereas Brooklyn proposed to the actor in July 2020 with a large emerald-cut diamond situated on a thin pavé band, she rocked a different sparkler at the Met Gala, featuring a massive oval diamond with two triangular accent diamonds on each side. It appears she's actually been wearing it since her wedding ceremony, where she walked down the aisle in a custom Valentino dress and floral lace opera gloves. Perhaps she's taking after her mother-in-law, Victoria Beckham, and already building up a collection of multiple engagement rings?
